Notes: Teaching to See

A Few Take Aways from Teaching to See with Inge Druckery

Graphic Design Is:

  • Seeing and Envisioning. The eye has to move around enjoyably with nothing getting stuck. It all needs to flow and work together. There should be nothing used without purpose.

  • Always Visualizing an Idea. It’s about drawing attention, informing, distance reading. And it’s also about symbolizing something because, like poetry, you have to get the essence of something.

In Graphic Design:

  • Training the eye is very important. You can’t come up with ideas if you don’t see first. See, understand and translate what things are doing. Go beyond just showing what something is, show what's happening with the subject.
  • The control of negative area makes a difference. The space around the form is just as important as the the form.

  • Give yourself time to stare at the work. Examine the work to see what’s there and to see what’s possible.
